Though many Indian origins denounced the British politician Jeremy Corbyn’s tweet on Sunday in which he described the actions of the Indian government in Kashmir as “deeply disturbing” and “unacceptable”, a British Sikh Member of Parliament (MP) has endorsed leader of the opposition.
A labor Party MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has become the first Indian origin British MP to criticize the Indian government’s revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, tweeted: “The situation in Kashmir is deeply disturbing. Human rights abuses taking place are unacceptable. The rights of the Kashmiri people must be respected and UN resolutions implemented.”

His tweet sparked fury among the Indian diaspora in Britain and led to thousands of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) trolling him.
Nandini (@NAN_DINI_) tweeted at Corbyn: “Just to remind you the Sun Set On The British Empire seven decades ago. India is an independent, sovereign nation & knows what is best for her & her people.”

Dhesi, the first turban-wearing MP in Britain, elected in 2017, retweeted Corbyn’s tweet and wrote: “Well said @jeremycorbyn. We cannot remain silent in the face of human rights abuses. We need to stand in solidarity with the #Kashmiri people in their hour of need.”

On August 5, he tweeted: “Extremely concerned about the growing tensions in Jammu & Kashmir. There has already been so much bloodshed & human rights abuse in this once peaceful beautiful land. Political & army leaders need to realise that their actions can have devastating consequences for people’s lives.”
Dhesi was born in Slough, England, to Indian parents. His parents hail from Raipur village in Jalandhar in Punjab.
