Several more Indians who are highly skilled can now be potentially working in Britain as new points- based immigration system has been launched by the United Kingdom which is said to start from the next year.
This new points- based immigration system is said to replace the Tier 1 and Tier 2 schemes and would take effect from the 1st of the month of January in 2021. The cap on the number of skilled workers is being scrapped and a small number of workers who are highly skilled would be allowed to enter with no job offer.
The EU and non- EU citizens would be treated equally under the new single global system for workers as it replaces the free movement which had been in existence between the United Kingdom and the EU which had further allowed an unlimited number of the citizens of EU to live and work in the United Kingdom and vice versa with no need of visa.
The freedom of movement is said to come to an end when the transition period ends which would be done on the 31st of December in the year 2020.
The migrants who are skilled would now require 70 points for being eligible in order to apply for entering the United Kingdom to work and the opening of the new route is said to be done in the season of Autumn in the year 2020.
The mandatory eligibility for the route of the new skilled worker would comprise of a job offer with the employer, a minimum salary of £25,600 a year, the ability to speak in English and also an A- level qualification or any equivalent where as the Tier 2 system that is currently under existence would just ask for a degree and a £30,000 minimum salary.
There would be allocation of points for specific skills, qualifications, salaries or professions as it aims in attracting those from across the globe with the highest skills.
No resident labour market test would be made available and the dependents can accompany the skilled workers and they will be eligible for applying regarding the indefinite leave to remain which is also known as permanent residency.
Taking into consideration the recommendations from the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the salary threshold has been lowered to £25,600.
It has also been said that the people who don’t meet the salary threshold will be able to trade the characteristics like having a job being offered in a shortage occupation or having a PhD that is said to be relevant to the job, against a lower salary but it has been said that they would be earning more than £20,480.
It has been said by the Home Office that the estimation has been done which shows that around 70 per cent of the EU workforce that is currently in existence in Britain would not be meeting the requirements of the skilled worker route.
Priti Patel who is the home secretary has said while launching the scheme that, “We’re ending free movement, taking back control of our borders and delivering on the people’s priorities by introducing a new UK points- based immigration system, which will bring overall migration numbers down.”
It has also been said that there would also be no route for the people who are self- employed even though they tend to obtain an innovator visa or would make an entry in the global talent scheme which would allow the scientists who are highly skilled, academics and also the researchers for working the United Kingdom without a job offer.
This move that has been made by the United Kingdom immigration was greatly welcomed by the Indian business bodies as they said that this would benefit the skilled Indians but has also expressed concerns over the shortage of labour in few sectors.
