Two Indian origin Canadians have been charged in Oregon with bitcoin fraud using Twitter, according to the Justice Department.
According to the charges, the 23-year-old Karanjit Singh Khatkar and the 24-year-old Jagroop Singh Khatkar, of Surrey, British Columbia, allegedly stole 23.2 bitcoins valued at $233,220 from a woman in Oregon.
Karanjit Khatkar was taken into custody early this month when he flew into Las Vegas, while Jagroop Khatkar was still on the run, likely in Canada. However, it is still unclear if the two were related.
The Khatkars opened a Twitter account under a name @HitBTCAssist that gave an impression that it was related to such a firm in Hong Kong and when the woman got in touch with them to withdraw money with that company they persuaded to send information that enabled them to take over her email and bitcoin accounts.
According to the complaint, 23.2 bitcoins were transferred from her account to Karanjit Khartkar, who transferred about 11.6 bitcoins to Jagroop Khatkar.
Bitcoin is an internet-based world’s first crypto-currency in which transactions are recorded in the blockchain that is public and contains records of every transaction that takes place.
