Nirmala Sitharaman who is the Union Finance Minister of India has dispelled the doubts stating the law that has been proposed in the Budget 2020 where in it has been proposed a change in law will not tax the income of the Non- resident Indians which they have earned outside the country.

It has also been said that it is required that the Non- resident Indians would have to stay for a minimum of 240 days outside the country instead of 181 days in order to classify themselves as NRIs.

Narendra Sawaikar who is an NRI commissioner has said that the change in law would not be taxing the income that is earned by the Non- resident Indians outside the country but it only required that the NRIs would have to pay the taxes on the income being earned in the country India either actively or passively.

The NRI commissioner Narendra Sawaikar has mentioned stating that, if an individual who accrues a rental income from the property that he/ she owns and the individual is staying in any foreign country, then that individual would be liable to pay the tax. He added saying that this income could be transferred to the country of residence, by the individual in order to avoid paying the tax and this is said to be done under the current ruling.

The NRI commissioner has said that he had met Mansukh Mandviya who is the Union Minister of State for Shipping (MOS), during a month back and had placed the concerns which have been raised by the seafarers before the Union Minister for Shipping.

Narendra Sawaikar has said that although it has been clarified regarding the matter by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, however, if there persists any case regarding on any further issues, the same could then be placed before the government.
