Ruling Al Saud family’s prince of Saudi Arabia’s was flogged and jailed in Jeddah as a court-ordered punishment. The offence for which the Prince was being punished is not disclosed but, said that the unidentified prince was also ordered to serve a prison sentence.
The flogging was carried out by a Saudi policeman on Monday after the medical checks have ensured that the prince is healthy.
Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Shariah law under which homicide and unintentional homicide are treated as a civil dispute between people. In murder cases, if the family members of the victim accept compensation (or blood money, as referred to under Shariah law), the accused is pardoned.
Earlier, on 18 October, Prince Turki bin Saud al-Kabeer was executed after found guilty of shooting a man to death during a brawl three years ago. The execution of the prince was the first in more than four decades since 1970s. Prince Turki bin Saud al-Kabir had pleaded guilty of shooting Adel al-Mohaimeed after a brawl.
Saudi social media users interpreted the execution of the prince as a sign of equality under the Islamic law.
The previous occasion in which a royal was executed in the Islamic country was in 1975, when Faisal bin Musaid al-Saud was executed for assassinating his uncle, King Faisal.
