The peaceful protests were held in the US cities of Chicago and Boston by the India-American and Indian students against the Citizenship Amendment Act. They say that protests are being done as this is a step that is in the path of rupturing India’s social fabric.
More than 200 people has joint the protests and gathered around the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in downtown Washington, in front of the Indian Embassy.
The students during the protests said that the horrific behaviour of the Indian government is being condemned by Chicago. A resolution has also been passed by the protesters, where in they requested the Indian government to withdraw both the NRC and the CAA.
“We are outraged by the violence and actively condemn the brutality inflicted upon students at Jamia Milia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU),” said the Indian students who are residing in Chicago.
In order to boycott the NRC and repeal the CAA, the diverse section of Indian diaspora had gathered earlier this week on the steps of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The citizenship amendment act that has been passed in recent times says that, the non-Muslim communities which includes Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities of the three neighbouring countries being Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and have come to India on or before December 31, 2014 will be given Indian citizenship and will not be treated as illegal immigrants.
