According to a research done by National Foundation for American Policy, hiring H-1B visa holders is a good idea as the US workers would get to earn well.
It even found that the jobs of US workers would be affected if the immigrant visa programs are restricted.
From 2005 to 2018, this was the first study done on visa data. The more workers with a H-1B visa within an occupation reduces the rate of unemployment in that occupation.
There was another study conducted by the non-partisan and non-profit public policy research firm on the same and according to them, amidst unemployment, the rate of unemployment for computer occupation has fallen down by 2.8%. Whereas, it went up by 4.1% to 15% for other occupations.
Having said, there is high demand for technology skills in the US because most of the H-1B visa petitions are filed for computer application.
Strangely, these facts are coming out at a time when Trump is deciding on banning non-immigrant work visas.
Stuart Anderson, the NFAP Executive Director, says, “The study’s findings show it makes little sense to impose new restrictions on H-1B visa holders, since doing so is likely to push more work out of the United States and harm U.S. workers.”
Stuart has worked as an executive associate commissioner for policy and planning. In the George Bush Administration, he worked as a counsellor to the Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization services.
According to Emsi Job Posting Analytics, ending May 13, 2020, over 6,25,000 vacant jobs in computer application were advertised online. The most common ones were to H-1B visa holders.
Finally, the Trump Administration will have to think over their decision of exercising stringent rules on H-1B visas for the Optional Practical Training Program for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students given the data that shows a real picture of unemployment.
