The Nepal government on Sunday declared the citizenship of eight people of Indian origin as invalid on the ground that they obtained the citizenship through forged documents.

According to officials, the decision to cancel the citizenship certificates of the eight Indian origin individuals was taken in a cabinet meeting.

The eight persons are identified as Rajendra Mahato, Binde Mahato, Ashok Shah, Danadevi Mahato, Rajeshwar Mahato, Sushil Mahato, Ramkishor Mahato, and Rajkumar Mahato.

In the meantime, Rakesh Mishra, the joint general secretary of Rastriya Janta Party-Nepal (RJP-N) told that the government should properly investigate the matter before taking such a decision.

“I doubt whether the government had accumulated sufficient evidence that Indian nationals were granted Nepalese citizenship certificates. It is a mockery to punish those who acquire citizenship certificates without punishing those officials responsible for providing the citizenship without proper documents,” he said.
