The Historic Library of National Congress, Washington conducted an event on Wednesday in the remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi on account of his 150th Birth Anniversary.
S.Jaishankar, The External Affairs Minister and Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representative actively participated in this remarkable event.
Jaishankar expressed his respect to Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial at the Embassy. Pelosi addressed the gathering by contributing as a featured speaker.
Jaishankar & HarshVardhan(An Indian Ambassador to the US) presented Pelosi Mahatma Gandhi’s bust. To this she said, “I will display it with great pride in the Speaker’s office of the capital of the United States so that anyone who visits there will see that respect and admiration that we have for Gandhi”
In her speech, she expressed her gratitude to Mahatma Gandhi for being an inspiration and source of strength in the civil rights movement against racial discrimination and the learning from Satyagraha.
Additionally, she mentioned about how King Martin Luther took inspiration from this movement. This is what she said “That is a debt we owe to India”
There was an exhibition set up by the Library of National Congress on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, where the US house and Senate picked up resolutions from Gandhi’s teachings. Raja Krishnamoorthi and few other members co-sponsored it.
Krishnamoorthi quoted “Gandhi’s dedication to public service is an inspiration, and even when faced with incredible hardship and injustice, he never wavered in fighting for freedom, dignity, and equality for all. Every day, I am grateful for the profound example he set not just for lawyers and public servants like myself, but for all of humanity. As an Indian Americans serving in Congress, I am proud to play my part in honoring his legacy through the introduction of this bipartisan resolution honoring Mahatma Gandhi’s life and legacy.”
