Around 69% of Canadians think of voting for the New Democratic Party leader, Jagmeet Singh, who wears kirpan and turban, according to a survey.
The survey was conducted by Angus Reid Institute and found that Canadians are more enthusiastic about voting Jagmeet Singh. 71% of Canadians think that a member of minority leading the major political party is good for Canadian politics.
However, the survey also found that Jagmeet Singh being a practicing Sikh can also hurt his chances in the elections. But 77% Canadians also said that a politician’s religious as well as cultural identity should not matter and only their politics should speak.
The report is published in the Times of India.
According to the survey, in Quebec, Jagmeet Singh might face a real pushback. In Quebec, accommodating religious minorities is a part of historical and political process. In 2011, Quebec was the largest state providing most numbers of seats to the NDP.
The survey also believed that although Jagmeet Singh has garnered large amount of media coverage, still most of the Canadians don’t know of him. However, most of the Canadians were of the opinion that NDP does have specific vision in front of them it can manage the government competently.
