A 29-year-old Indo-Canadian truck driver Jaskirat Sidhu has been detained and charged in one of the utmost extensively enclosed newsflash events in Canada this year.
Sixteen members of a youth ice hockey team, the Humboldt Broncos, had died and 13 others were bruised when their bus hit with a truck driven by Sidhu on April 6. The accident set off days of nationwide grief, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joining the memorial service for the departed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said detectives from its Major Crime Unit arrested Sidhu from his household in Calgary in the western province of Alberta. The apprehension was “without incident.”

He has been charged with 16 counts of risky action of a motor vehicle causing demise, and 13 counts of unsafe operation of a motor vehicle causing physical harm.
“These are serious criminal code charges. In order to lay these charges we required evidence of a motor vehicle being operated in a manner that is dangerous to the public,” the RCMP statement noted. “Our organization has faith in the justice system and we will be watching closely as this court process plays out. Our primary focus continues to be supporting the survivors, families, and others that were directly impacted by the tragedy on April 6,” the statement added.
