Suella Braverman who is of Indian- origin has been appointed as the new Attorney General of the United Kingdom in the reshuffled cabinet of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this month.
She has sworn in formally for the post on Monday at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
The Indian- origin Suella Braverman is of 39 years of age, a barrister and a law student graduated from the Cambridge University. She has done the specialization in the subjects of public law and judicial review. She has said that as the new Attorney General of the United Kingdom, her priority will be the restoration of confidence in the justice system.
Braverman has made a said that she feels privileged to be sworn in as the attorney general and that she is the second woman to be appointed as the attorney general in the United kingdom.
As she has referred to the former Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, she has said that, “Restoring confidence in the criminal justice system is my top priority. I want to thank my predecessor for his work in this area and his distinguished service to government,”
Robert Buckland who is the Lord Chancellor and the UK Secretary of State for Justice has welcomed the new incumbent to the important and a historic role of Attorney General as the chief legal adviser for the government.
It has been said by Robert Buckland that the relationship that would be shared between the law officers and the lord chancellor is very important and that he would be looking forward in working closely with the attorney regarding the matters which relates to the rule of law. He has described it as a cornerstone of the democracy of the United Kingdom and also as a major factor in the success of the nation.
The role that is being played by the Indian- origin Suella Braverman would involve overseeing the work that is done by the departments of the law officers which comprises of the independent prosecuting authorities, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Serious Fraud Office.
Suella Braverman has been working as MP for Fareham in the south- east England since the year 2015. she has been a vocal supporter of Brexit and has earlier also served in the erstwhile Department for Exiting the European Union, as a minister.
She has also defeated the UK Home Office in the past in the immigration cases, being a former member of the treasury counsel of the panel of the Attorney General.
Suella Braverman was born in London to migrant parents who were from Kenya and Mauritius with the roots in Goa and in the South India. Braverman whose maiden name is Suella Fernandes has studied law at the Queen’s College in the University of Cambridge and has completed a Master’s in law from the University of Paris.
Suella Braverman is the first female Attonery General who has been appointed by a government of Conservative Party.
