The American Association of Physicians unleashed their list for the 2020 members including 3 Indian Americans out of the 72 members that are going to be honored.
The three elected Indian Americans include Prasad Devarajan of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center; Svati Shah of Duke University; and Vijay Shah of the Mayo Clinic.
As a popular pediatric nephrologist, Devarajan is known for treating children and adolescents struggling with kidney stones, chronic kidney diseases and anything related to renal failure. With an ideology of putting patient’s wellbeing on the forefront, he has managed to gain the trust of his patients and the hearts of the people across.
Not just that, Devarajan has also authored over 300 peer reviewed publications along with 70 book chapters. He has also taken part in over 200 lectures that he has participated in internationally.
Several of his research activities and papers have received funding from National Institutes of Health and several esteemed organisations as well. He has been in this field for over 30 years and emphasises on basic, translational and clinical inquiries for improved child health.
Devarajan, along with his team has been working on finding the causes responsible for causing acute and chronic failures of the kidney. The results from the researchers are further contributing to develop novel biomarkers in the field of kidney disease and treatments.
Svati Shah, from Duke University is an associate professor and vice-chief of Translational Research and associate director of the Cardiology Fellowship within the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine.
Her main focus on the labs include molecular epidemiology of cardiometabolic diseases with the collaboration of the omics technology including genomics and metabolomics being the main ones.
She has also earned an MHS in medical genomics from Duke University, followed by her M.D from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Lastly, the third elected Indian American for the honor is Vijay Shah who is a faculty member at Mayo Clinic. His main area of research and focus is on the interrelated findings of the liver diseases, especially that of the chronic liver disease.
The research also emphasises on both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic forms of liver cirrhosis.
Some of the notable work of Shah and his colleagues include studying about the varying impacts of the liver disease and the associated therapies included. Some of the notable ones include the research concerning the alcohol related liver diseases and the treatments for complications including portal hypertension.
He had earned his bachelor’s and medical degree from the Northwestern, where he also completed his residency.
The Association of American Physicians is a non-profit which was founded in 1885 for “the advancement of scientific and practical medicine.”
Every year, the organisation identifies specific people who have achieved the excellence in attaining these goals who are then nominated by the Council of the Association. The election allows further exchange of ideas and contributions, further helping enrich people’s thoughts and ideologies.
For an eligible nomination, a candidate has to be nominated by a member and then seconded by a member following which the individuals are looked over by the council and their works are judged and then the final list of the honorary nominations are released.
