As per the reports from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Centre will start issuing e-passports for all the citizens soon. Sanjay Bhattacharya, the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs posted “India to soon introduce next-gen ePassport for citizens,”. The e-passports will be secure with biometric data and will ensure a smooth passage through the immigration posts across the globe. A microchip will be embedded in the passport and it will hold crucial information related to the biometric data of the passport holder. The e-passport will disallow unauthorized data transfer through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

The Indian government issued 20,000 diplomatic and official e-pasporrts that are embedded with chips on a trial basis. Once the run is successful, the Centre will start issuing the e-passports for all the citizens of the country. The Indian citizens have been getting personalized printed booklets from the past few years. All the standards as per the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will be followed. They are quite tougher and harder to destroy as per the Ministry. The chip on the e-passport comes with an internationally recognized logo and all the 36 passport offices of the country will start issuing e-passports soon. The procedure to apply will remain the same on the government website.
