The majority population of Minneapolis city is in support of dismantling the police department after George Floyd’s death. The dismantling decision was taken late Sunday by city council considering the nationwide protests about racism in law enforcement.
Council President Lisa Bender said “We committed to dismantling policing as we know it in the city of Minneapolis and to rebuild with our community a new model of public safety that actually keeps our community safe”.
George Floyd’s death protest sparked and it led to dismantle the current Minneapolis police force. The black man was taken into police custody and a police officer pressed on his neck to death. Floyd’s death took a turn of protesting for black lives across the country which has a record of racism.
The forethought of dismantling the police department for the safety of the citizens. 9 from 13 councillors of the city said “a new model of public safety” as a vow.
