The former governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and top economist Raghuram Rajan is now in the fray to potentially head the Bank of England.
Rajan is among the main contenders to replace outgoing chief of the British central bank, Mark Carney, who will complete his full term and step down from the coveted post in January 2020, according to a Bloomberg report.
Chancellor Philip Hammond will be appointing the next Governor later this year.
The candidature of Andrew Bailey, the chief executive of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, has been backed by the experts in the UK. However, Rajanis predicted as the second closest contender by the Financial Times.
Rajan has not confirmed whether he is in the fray for the next Bank of England chief’s post. In February 2018, he had dismissed speculations of him competing for the top job in the Bank of England.
Currently, Rajan, 56, is a professor in economics at the University of Chicago. He served as the chief of RBI between 2013-16 and also between 2003-07 headed the New-York-based International Monetary Fund (IMF).
