A resolution against the citizenship law that has been amended in India is being made in the United States. The Cambridge in Massachusetts state has now become the second city in the United States to pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act with Seattle being the first. The Citizenship Amendment Act has been passed by the government of India headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A unanimous resolution has been passed in the Cambridge City Council against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), on Tuesday. The resolution that has been made was regarding the calling upon the Parliament of India to uphold the secular constitution of the country by repealing the law and to stop the National Register of Citizens (NRC) that has been proposed.
The resolution has said that the city council has been drawn the attention to an issue that was made on 11th of December in the year 2019 that the Parliament of India has passed the Citizenship Amendment Act which would use religion as the criteria in order provide the citizenship of India.
The Citizenship Amendment Act that has been passed by the government of India seeks in providing the citizenship of India to the non- Muslim communities I.e., the people belonging to the religions of Hinduism, Christianity, Buddism, Parsian, Jainism and Sikhism from the three neighboring nations namely Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh who have been facing religious persecution there and who have come to India on or before the 31st of December of the year 2014 would be provided with the citizenship of India.
The fears regarding marginalization and the disenfranchisement have been emerged among the Muslim minority of India with the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. The Muslim community in India is said to be around 15 per cent of the population being 1.3 billion of the country.
The resolution of the Cambridge has declared that the racist and repressive policies of the government of Narendra Modi were inconsistent with the values of the city where in the values of the city welcomes the South Asian communities belonging to all castes and religions.
The resolution made by the Cambridge city council in Massachusetts is said to be the second city of the United States with Seattle being the first to pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act that has been passed by the government of India.
