The British-Indians who are residing in London state that, they play a major role in the UK general elections. Three different groups of British Indians mobilized hundreds of volunteers in order to campaign against the Labour. They claim that, the outcome based on their influence is around 70 seats.
British Hindu and Indian Votes Matter (BHIVM) was formed by more than 600 PIOs in order to bring British-Indian and non-Indian British Hindu who were angry with Labour for its anti-India stance under the leader Jeremy Corbyn, to pitch on anti-Labour.
One of the volunteers said that, they have focused in places like the Midlands, the North, South West and Wales which are outside London and have identified more than eighty seats around the nation which include more than thirty marginals and could influence the Indians.
“We focused predominantly outside London in places like the Midlands, the North, South West and Wales. We identified 80 plus seats nationwide including 30 plus marginals we could influence the Indian diaspora vote and worked relentlessly over the last three months,” said a volunteer, Vinod Tikoo.
He said that, they had worked more on anti-Labour than pro-Conservatives. “This was more of anti-Jeremy Corbyn, than anything else,”he said.
Labour experienced its worst performance since 1935 by winning just 203 seats at the election.
The campaigners used social media as well as traditional method for the promotion of elections. They went to each and every door in the process of asking for votes and also spread awareness about the Labour Party and the Conservatives agendas. Initially there were 250 individuals that were involved in campaigning through social media spreading the information about the policies of the Labour Party, their resolution on Kashmir etc. Which gradually led to open debates on social media platform.
