The Great North Run of 40th year is postponed to next year, 2021 due to the fears of coronavirus. Over 55,000 runners registered to take part in the half marathon on 13 september of this year.
Great North Run is cancelled which would be its 40th year if conducted this year. But the ongoing pandemic stopped the great run. Organizers of the event couldn’t take it easily as it is difficult to maintain social distance with a huge crowd from Newcastle to South Shields.
Runners who are eligible to get the refund or can use it by transferring to next year entry.
Along with the Great North Run, The Junior and Mini Great North Run and the Great North 5 km are also cancelled which were events actually on saturday.
The running event founder expressed it as “devastating”. As it is the 40th year, the plan was to make the event ever big with mass participation, he said.
He added “It’s a very sad day for us and we’re very disappointed, but everyone understands why it’s not to be.”
Paul Foster, the chief executive of the Great Run Company said “We haven’t taken the decision lightly”
As the goals are not possible to meet in the current situation, the organizers decided to cancel as the best course of action.
