An Indian origin, 16-year-old mountain climber experienced a fall from the 11,240 feet Mount Hood. Gurbaz Singh is from Canada who had miraculously survived after the 500-feet fall from the highest summit in coastal US state Oregon, Mount Hood.
It is reported by the CNN affiliated KATU channel that the 16-year-old was ascending the peak with his friend for his 90th mountain climb on Tuesday and he lost his footing on ice and fell off from the part of the mountain which is known as The Pearly Gates to the Devil’s Kitchen area below.
Miraculously, Gurbaz is suffering with only one broken leg after the dangerous 500-feet fall and underwent a surgery in a hospital in Portland.
It took several hours for the rescue operation in order to get to the injured climber who has been stranded at an elevation of about 10,500 feet due to the location and elevation. The rescuers managed to splint the leg of Gurbaz once he was located and the descent down the mountain had slowly begun after four hours from the initial fall.
According to the US Forest Service, Mount Hood is the highest summit in Oregon and is the most visited peak that is covered with snow in the nation. The officials say that, the mountain would be climbed by more than 10,000 people each year.
The teen credits his helmet and his training as the reasons why he had not experience major injuries.
Gurbaz’s father said that, once Gurbaz is completely healed, he and his son will plan to go back to Mount Hood and conquer the climb together.
