It is a great moment of pride for the Indians as 4 Indian-Americans have won the state and local elections in US. One of them is Muslim and also a former White House technology policy advisor.
Ghazala Hashmi, who is a former community college professor, made history by being the very first Muslim woman to win the elections for the Virginia State Senate. In addition to that, Suhas Subramanyam, who was formerly working as the White House technology policy advisor under former president Barack Obama won the elections for the Virginia State House of Representatives.
Hashmi was successful in beating Republican State Senator Glen Sturtevant in her maiden attempt for Virginia’s 10th Senate District.
Following her historic victory, Hashmi stated saying, “This victory is not mine alone. It belongs to all of you who believed that we needed to make progressive change here in Virginia, for all of you who felt that you haven’t had a voice and believed in me to be yours in the General Assembly.”
The event was such a huge breakthrough that even Hilary Clinton took to her twitter to congratulate Hashmi on her glorious win in the elections.
To the congratulatory tweet made by Clinton, Hashmi replied saying, “I am deeply honoured by your words, Secretary Clinton. You broke so many glass ceilings for women in public service.”
After recovering from her win, Hashmi assured the people of Virginia that she is going to have all the Democrats on her side that will further help protect the Viriginians from the ill impacts of climate crisis as well as the gun violence that she find not point in. She is also going to work to further make healthcare more affordable and work to create more funding for public education.
In the meanwhile, Subramanyam was elected in the Viriginia State House of Representatives and promised the people of Loudoun and Prince William that he is always going to lend an ear to listen to what the people have to say. He promised stating that he is going to work tirelessly for the people involved and said that even though the campaign is over, it is just the starting for his work.
Another Indian-American in California, Manu Raju won the election to carry on with his service as San Francisco’s public defender. The last win amidst the four was secured by Dimple Ajmera who won the re-election in the Charlotte City Council.
