For the first time, a Sikh-American named Gurbir S Grewal, is appointed as the New Jersey’s AG. He is a prominent Indian-American lawyer. Following the state Senate approval for his nomination, Mr. Grewal (44) has become the first Sikh attorney general of the US state of New Jersey.
During the confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Grewal said, “I never imagined that my life’s journey could bring me here today,”
“I’m extremely humbled, and I’m looking forward to getting started,” he said. “My first order of business is to introduce myself and get up to speed.”
Following the Senate approval for his nomination with a 29-0 vote, Grewal became the nation’s first Sikh state attorney general. Later, at a private ceremony, Grewal had sworn into office, reports NJ.com.
A registered Democrat, Grewal was made Bergen County’s top law enforcement official in 2016 by the Governor Chris Christie. Earlier, he worked as the chief of the economic crimes unit at the US Attorney’s Office under former federal prosecutor Paul Fishman, according to the reports.
Grewal told lawmakers that he would focus on building relationships between police and the communities, besides putting efforts to stem the opioid crisis. He also gave a word to direct the office’s prosecuting arm i.e. the Division of Criminal Justice to work with prosecutors in the state’s 21 counties to coordinate response to the heroin epidemic.
Since January 2016, Grewal has run the 265-employee Prosecutor’s Office. He has worked to combat opioid abuse by employing strategies like pairing arrested suspects and the recently hospitalised with addiction counselors.
In December, Grewal was nominated to serve as the next attorney general of the US state of New Jersey. He was named by New Jersey Governor-elect Phil Murphy.
